FAQS

Joining The Bali Hope Ultra

Places are limited on what is one of the world’s smallest ultramarathon. We welcome runners from all levels of experience.

Β· Early bird pricing

We ask those taking the early bird pricing option to start a monthly payment option within 21 days of registration.

Β· Example monthly payment options

  • Early bird single runner (shared room) price at US$3150: US$350 & 8 monthly payments of US$350

  • Early bird single runner (private room) price at US$4000: US$350 & 8 monthly payments of US$462.5

Β· Other Payment options

We always do our best to support runners from a range of backgrounds.

If you are a student, nurse, teacher, firefighter, veteran or similar, or have special circumstances, please let us know as we have some capacity to support different pricing options.

Β· Can I bring a partner and/or children?

Of course. Partners and children are very welcome and we have a range of options to include them in the experience. We normally always have young people on the support crew, including one 15 y/o who crewed for her dad.

Witnessing a team of adults from around the world making change happen for a disadvantaged community can only be a positive experience.

Β· What will they do during the run?

That's entirely up to them. We encourage partners and children over 14 years old to join our support crews on the night of the run. This is a profound and enjoyable experience and a place on the support crew is highly sought after. Otherwise we recommend being at the start and finish line and staying at the hotel which we use as the Race HQ at the halfway mark.

Β· Can I join the ultra marathon but not the rest of the week?

Unfortunately not. The integrity of our running team, our shared experience and our itinerary means this is not possible.

Β· Do I need to bring my own β€˜crew’?

No, most runners come on their own. Our crew crews for everyone.

Even though most of the support crew are partners or families members of runners they crew for everyone not just who they come with.

Β· Links to the Strava of Previous Bali Hope Ultra runs

Here are links to some previous Bali Hope Ultra run’s on Strava. The time spread for our ultra team has been from 8 hours to just over 17 hours for the back marker who completed the distance while carrying an injury.

Under 15 Hours

Under 12 hours

Under 10 hours

Β· What is your advice if I have never run an ultra marathon before?

About half those joining tend to be newcomers to ultra running, some may have completed a marathon and others just 20km. The common characteristic of all these individuals was a high level of commitment to prepare as best they could. We connect the team via a Whatsapp group 4-5 months from the start of the event, host zoom calls to share

Β· What is your advice on the right training schedule?

The support we provide our successful applicants includes access to a detailed 20 week training program written specifically for the Bali Hope Ultra.

Some of our more experienced team members will pass on their expert advice and answer questions through our team Whatsapp group.

There is certainly not one approach that suits everyone and factors such as your age, current fitness levels, nutrition and mindset are important. Some runners recommend a focus on strength, hill and speed training while others recommend building up to the event with a significant amount of β€œvolume”. There is plenty of advice available from runners of all levels who completed the course.

Β· What equipment will I need?

Mandatory equipment includes: a head torch, back light, camel pack and smart phone with an additional battery pack.

Β· What level of support is there on the run?

Bali Hope Ultra operates 3 start times to accommodate different levels of experience.

Runners can chose to start at either 5:30pm, 7:30pm or 9:30pm.

We suggest anyone targeting a sub-10 hour run choses the 9:30pm time, sub-12 hour at 7:30pm and everyone else at 5:30pm

With each starting group (of approx 10-12 runners) we have 3 SUVs and 3 motorbikes providing support with aid stations at approximately every 5km.

The SUVs are catered with access to nutrition, hydration and medical support.

Runner safety on this open-road race is our key priority. With this in mind we have a highly-experienced health and safety director, emergency medical back-up, and paramedics on the course.

Β· Is there a cut-off time?

Not officially but if a runner is on track to take more than 17 hours we may ask them to take an early exit. This has not happened yet.

Do you welcome β€œfast walkers”

We had a runner complete the course with an injury and in effect they were a β€œfast-walker” so in short the answer is yes.

Β· What insurance do I need?

Every runner will need personal travel & emergency medical insurance covering endurance events.

Fundraising

Β· What is your advice on fundraising?

Critical factors on successful fundraising include: starting early to raise awareness of what you are doing, the impact it will make and the training commitment required to complete the run, and then follow this up with personal messages to friends, family and your broader network.

The unique nature of the ultramarathon and the pedigree of our impact partner will make fundraising considerably easier than you’d expect.

Β· What if I miss the fundraising target

We don’t penalise you for missing the target but ask you to commit to doing your best. The averaged raised by each runner is nearly double the target amount.

Crew / Non-runner pricing

We do our best to be as flexible as possible in welcoming non-running guests to the event and have a range of options available. Please find details here. We do ask non-running guests chose one of these options to support our planning, logistics and safety protocols.
